Today, I'm diving deep into a topic that often gets brushed under the carpet of the business world but is a true game-changer. Let me give you the full context first. As a committed lightworker, my lifelong mission has been to create positive change. When I realised that running my own business was the path to amplify my purpose, share what I am passionate about, and help others, a whole new world unfolded.
I quickly immersed myself in the sea of business knowledge, learning about various aspects such as social media, marketing strategies, managing finances, effective selling techniques, branding, and the significance of embodying authenticity. It has been a whirlwind of experiences, from celebrating my first client to launching group programs and coaching within other creators' domains.
Of course, it hasn't all been smooth sailing. To say that I've ridden the emotional rollercoaster would be an understatement. And if you've been navigating your business path for a while—whether throughout your life or just beginning—you're well aware of the distinction between absorbing information, doing the tangible work, and also managing the emotional currents that come with it.
So, let's talk about the often-overlooked gem in the business skillset—the practice of emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is probably one of the most important skills when it comes to making money, working with clients or customers, and running my own business. There is a huge amount of research showing us that this also applies to the world of investing, climbing the corporate ladder, and leading a team.
In this piece, I'm delving deep into one aspect of it: the art of detachment and how it weaves into the fabric of business operation. I'm excited to unveil a specific mindset shift that has the potential to skyrocket your business growth. This shift can help you attract fresh opportunities and gracefully tackle any challenges that arise.
The art of detachment makes you magnetic.
Before we dive in, let's get something straight: Detaching from outcomes doesn't mean shutting our eyes to reality or losing our fire. It's not about breaking ties with what we hold dear or stand for. Instead, it's like realizing some things don't need as much of our emotional juice as we give them. Detachment gives room for fresh ideas, new chances, and personal growth. Ready to take this deeper dive with me?
1. Social Media Posts
In today's world, where everything happens so fast, it's easy to get caught up in checking how many likes and comments your new social media post is getting.
Imagine this: You've got this amazing idea for a post, and you're really excited about what you've written. You share it on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or even on your podcast. But then something strange happens – you start doubting your own creation. You wonder if it's really that good, if people will like it, and your mood starts to change. It's like you're giving away your own power to those numbers...
But here's the thing: those numbers don't really show how well your business is doing, how many clients you have, or if your post is connecting with the people you want to reach.
Let's clear something up: just because something goes viral doesn't mean it's making you money. Having lots of followers doesn't necessarily mean they're the right people who want to work with you. And getting likes and comments doesn't mean your post is a huge success...
All those numbers really tell you is how many people clicked a button to like, comment, or share your stuff. That's it. What's even more surprising is that many people who actually became my private clients didn't always comment on my posts, but they had reached out to book a session or talk to me privately. Sometimes, I'll even hear from people I've never met before, telling me they've been reading my posts for years and finding them helpful. It's a pleasant surprise, like when an old colleague or a high school friend gets in touch, or even someone I've never crossed paths with.
So, let's uncover what's really going on here: it's about seeking approval. And you're definitely not alone in this – we've all been there. It's also tied to the idea of having control; you keep checking those numbers to feel like you have some say in how things are going.
But here's what you can do instead: start believing in your work. If you had a great idea and you've put it out there, trust that the right people will find it and connect with it. Once it's out in the world, it's on its own journey, and you can't control every little thing about it anymore.
Positive Affirmations/Mindset Shifts:
The right people find my work.
My work resonates with my dream clients.
My work is being seen and noticed.
I trust that my posts, work, and creations reach the right people.
2. Potential Client Sign-ups/ Customer Purchases/ Followers Not Buying
This is a big one. Particularly when we're just starting out or when our financial stability seems tied to the next purchase, we tend to get overly attached when people express interest in signing up, making a purchase, or inquiring about our offerings. (And if your financial well-being does depend on that next sign-up, remember, there's absolutely no shame in exploring other income streams that could bring you more ease and enable you to detach—it's actually quite magnetic energy!)
What's crucial here is detaching ourselves from whether they'll actually follow through. How can you tell if you're not detached from this? You might find yourself double-checking if they understood your instructions, sending multiple follow-up messages, liking their posts or stories just to remind them of your presence, and even constantly refreshing your PayPal or email (come on, who hasn't done this at some point?). You might replay the conversation in your mind, wondering if you said something wrong.
No need to feel embarrassed if this rings true for you. Trust me, we've all been there. But fear not, I've got some mindset shifts and affirmations that have worked wonders for both me and my clients.
You've got to place your trust in people's intuition, inner guidance, and their own choices. If what you offer truly resonates with them, they will take the step to sign up. If they're hesitating, reconsidering, then maybe they're not the right fit to begin with.
View potential clients/students/customers as empowered decision-makers who are choosing what aligns with their own intuition. Instead of obsessing over each sign-up or rejection, we can see them as individuals taking control of their choices.
And here's a truth bomb if you ever worry about saying the wrong thing: you can't say the wrong thing to the right client, so stop overthinking it.
The practice of detachment extends to how we perceive potential clients. Rather than fixating on each outcome, we can embrace the idea that potential clients are making empowered decisions based on their own intuition. This shift in perspective allows us to honour their autonomy while concentrating on the value we bring to the table.
Positive Affirmations/ Mindset Shifts:
I trust that the right clients will resonate with my offerings.
Potential clients are empowered to make choices that align with their needs.
I release the need to constantly check and follow up; the right clients will take action.
Clients/students/customers who are a perfect match to work with me are powerful decision-makers.
My work speaks directly to my dream soul clients.
I trust that the right people are naturally drawn into my world.
My soul clients feel comfortable asking questions if anything isn't clear enough.
I can't say the wrong thing to a soul client/customer; our connection is genuine.
My soul clients are empowered, making decisions that truly align with them.
3. Numbers
Numb-bbrrrrrrss. Yep, we're diving into the realm of numbers here. The financial digits, the tallies on social media, the count of clients, students, and customers. It's all about the numerical landscape—how many people signed up for that workshop, enrolled in your course, and all those other figures that line the path.
But let's get this straight from the start: this isn't about pretending those numbers don't exist or ignoring them. It's about shaking off that emotional attachment and the stories we weave around them.
And here's the thing: none of these numbers dictate your worth, your identity, or your future success. They're like those dashboard lights on your car—they give you insight into your current situation, but they don't set the course for where you'll be tomorrow.
Now, when it comes to your financial figures, it's important to stay grounded. You can't just stick your head in the sand, hoping everything will sort itself out. Detach from those numbers, step back, and look at the bigger picture.
Why does checking those numbers often feel like pulling teeth for many entrepreneurs? It's the meanings we attach to them—the comparison games, the "should-be" scenarios—that twist them into representations of our worth and value.
Practicing detachment here means recognizing these metrics without letting their emotional baggage chain us down. This shift allows us to see beyond the numbers and embrace the grander vision.
(Oh, quick side note: Should I write a post or record an episode on cultivating healthy money habits?)
Positive Affirmations/Mindset Shifts:
My value isn't determined by numbers; I am abundant regardless.
I interpret the numbers as insights, not as my destiny.
Detaching from numbers frees me to envision the bigger picture.
I release the need for comparison; my journey is uniquely mine.
My worth extends beyond numbers; I am a creator of value.
I am abundant in many ways at this very moment.
I am abundance in human form.
4. Other People's Opinions:
And here it is, the grand finale: Other People's Opinions. This one's a real game-changer, and it's the last but certainly not the least on our list. Brace yourself, because here's the deal—learning to detach from other people's opinions is an absolute must. Why, you ask? Because everyone, and I mean everyone (from your sibling to that success guru on the internet to your next-door neighbour), will have something to say about you, your work, and how you should be doing things. It's like a never-ending chorus of perspectives.
People might toss their judgments your way, chat about you behind your back, or even raise an eyebrow at what you're up to.
Here's the kicker: we often find ourselves stuck in the vanilla zone, paralyzed by the fear of being judged. But here's a truth bomb—right at this very moment, countless people are already forming opinions about you. Some voice them aloud, while others keep their thoughts hidden.
Embracing the fact that not everyone will jive with our message or methods sets us free. There's no need to burn energy trying to convince other people (who aren’t even your ideal customers or clients anyway) that what we're doing holds power and importance. Let them hold their opinions while you stand strong in your authenticity. By staying aligned with your own path, you're crafting a foundation built on integrity and self-assurance. Start stepping out of your comfort and be bold.
Positive Affirmations/Mindset Shifts:
I release the need for validation from others; I am my own compass.
The opinions of others do not define my worth or direction.
My authenticity is my power; I stand strong in it.
Embracing diverse opinions liberates me from the chains of judgement.
By staying true to myself, I create an unshakable foundation of integrity.
I am courageous and I take up space boldly.
I share my voice with confidence.
