A Personal Journey; How Hypnosis Changed my Life Forever

Picture this: I was a bright-eyed 19-year-old, unaware that my life was about to change thanks to a technique I later learned was hypnosis. Little did I know that a simple technique would set the stage for a future filled with newfound health and endless possibilities.

During my first year at university, I found myself battling a mysterious health issue that I later discovered was a psychosomatic disorder. These conditions are often triggered by stress and manifest as physical symptoms without any apparent medical cause. Some of the common symptoms people can experience are headaches, digestive issues, dizziness, pains in the body, racing heart, shaking, blood pressure problems amongst other symptoms. I was experiencing stomach pains, dizziness, and intermittent fevers, leaving me puzzled and frustrated. Countless doctor visits and specialist consultations offered no explanation, which, oddly enough, was both comforting and frustrating at the same time.

But then something extraordinary happened. I stumbled upon a yoga class at my university, where the instructor introduced us to deep relaxation techniques. I vividly recall the moment she played a guided relaxation recording during the first class I attended, and a wave of tranquillity washed over me. Suddenly, I felt wholly present in my own body, and it was a revelation. I was mind blown.

Intrigued, I diligently practised this technique every day for a week, simply aiming to feel good. Much to my surprise, my mysterious health problems vanished into thin air. I was captivated and wanted to know more. It wasn't until years later, as I delved into hypnosis studies in my mid twenties, that I discovered the very technique I had stumbled upon in one of my textbooks. A synchronicity?

That experience changed the course of my life. It ignited a deep curiosity about the power of the human mind and the immense potential it holds. Dissatisfied with my chosen university course, I yearned to make a difference, inspire others, and pursue a path that resonated with my passion. And so, I embarked on a journey of self-study and exploration.

Instead of studying for exams, I found myself immersed in books about meditation, spirituality, the law of attraction, mindfulness, and coaching. I downloaded Instagram, which was still a very new platform, following individuals who inspired me and were positively impacting others' lives. This became my morning ritual—a daily dose of visualisations and uplifting posts to remind me that a fulfilling life filled with impact was within reach.

While from an outsider’s perspective, it could appear that this hypnosis relaxation technique simply improved my health, but the reality was that it actually sparked a domino effect in my life. I could no longer stand sitting at a desk, studying subjects that left me unfulfilled. The thought of spending four more years at this university became unbearable.

I was at a crossroads, uncertain of my next move. Summoning every ounce of courage (and engaging in spirited debates with my parents), I made the bold decision to quit after just one year and embark on a gap year, immersing myself in new experiences abroad. The rest is a tale for another day!

A word of caution - you need to know this about hypnosis

I should issue a word of caution, hypnosis doesn't simply target the surface-level symptoms or offer a temporary fix. It goes much deeper, unearthing hidden treasures within your psyche. It uncovers dreams, passions, and aspirations that may have remained buried for far too long. Hypnosis has the power to stir your soul and ignite a fire within you. I speak from personal experience.

But hold on, what actually is hypnosis?

Hypnosis, a truly magical tool, is often shrouded in myths, misconceptions, and unfounded fears caused by its portrayal in the media. Who can forget the infamous scene in Dynasty where Krystle Carrington falls victim to hypnosis and attempts to kill her own husband? Or do you recall The Jungle Book? In both film adaptations, the colossal python Kaa induces a state of hypnosis by repeating the phrase "Trust in me" in a meditative voice to the young Mowgli who then blindly follows the snake.

The truth is, many people simply do not know what to expect from hypnosis. Stage hypnosis, though entertaining, fosters scepticism and doubt too. Therefore, it is really important for me to make sure that my clients understand exactly what hypnosis is, because trust is the ultimate foundation in my coaching and hypnotherapy.

Allow me to dispel these myths and shed light on the truth. Hypnosis is a safe, down-to-earth technique that harnesses the natural power of your mind, such a heightened concentration, focus, intentionality and working with the mind-body connection.

You have experienced hypnosis many times before...

You have experienced hypnosis numerous times before, without even realising it. Have you ever become so engrossed in your work that you lost track of time and your surroundings? Remember those moments when you were so taken by a captivating book that someone could talk to you, and you wouldn't even hear them or respond appropriately? And what about those daydreaming episodes that swept you away effortlessly? Or when you got lost in a compelling movie plot and everything else fades into the background?

When you engage in hypnosis, whether alone or with a practitioner, you remain fully aware of what is happening. You actively participate in the process, comprehending and retaining the guidance provided by the practitioner. Contrary to popular belief, hypnosis does not induce unconsciousness or sleep—falling asleep during a session is counterproductive. When working with a practitioner it is always a collaboration.

We now understand that all hypnosis is, in fact, self-hypnosis. You hold the power to have an incredible experience and make powerful changes in your life. Consequently, you must be open and receptive to the change you seek. Contrary to Hollywood's depiction, it is impossible to make someone act against their beliefs, values, or morals through hypnosis.
